FIA Karting: The Governing Body

Sixty years of rulebooks, world titles and the ladder every future F1 champion has climbed.

Every world karting title since 1964 traces back to one Paris meeting room. Before Max Verstappen took the 2013 KZ crown or Lando Norris the 2014 KF title, the framework that made those results mean something already existed — written, policed and homologated by the sport's governing body.

Origins

The FIA created the Commission Internationale de Karting in 1962 as a sister body to its sporting commission, with Jean-Marie Balestre as inaugural president. Two years later the first Karting World Championship was fought out, won by Italy's Guido Sala — making it the second-oldest FIA world title after Formula 1 itself. The commission became CIK-FIA after a 1978 reorganisation, and under long-serving president Ernest Buser (1978–1999) it spread sanctioned racing to five continents and put karting on television.

The rulebook kept evolving. Chassis and engine homologation arrived in 1981, opening what many call international karting's golden era. The 100cc direct-drive formula gave way to KF regulations in 2007 under president Luigi Macaluso, and in 2016 the leaner OK class replaced KF and revived entry numbers. In 2017 Felipe Massa became the first Formula 1 driver to lead the commission, and the CIK-FIA identity was folded into a cleaner brand: FIA Karting. Akbar Ebrahim has held the presidency since 2022.

How it shaped karting

FIA Karting's real power is definitional: it decides what a world-class kart is. Homologation cycles dictate what OTK, IAME and every rival build; class regulations decide where careers are made. Its blue-riband ladder is unmatched:

  • The World Championship for OK and OK-Junior, plus the gearbox crowns in KZ and KZ2 — see our OK class history and KZ gearbox history.
  • The European Championship, karting's toughest season-long test.
  • The Academy Trophy, a one-make talent shootout for federations' best juniors.

The honours list doubles as a Formula 1 census. Alain Prost was the first CIK champion to win the F1 drivers' title, in 1985; Verstappen and Norris later did it the other way round, winning karting world titles first. And the greatest pure karter of the CIK era, five-time world champion Danilo Rossi, never needed F1 to become a legend.

Today

FIA Karting sanctions the World and European Championships, the World Cup events and the Academy Trophy, delegating promotion to commercial partners — most visibly RGMMC, whose Champions of the Future series shadows the official calendar. National federations, from Italy's ACI to Karting Australia, carry its rulebook into domestic racing.

In our data, FIA Karting events are the heaviest-weighted results a driver can score. Every round appears on the calendar, and world championship form drives the OK and KZ standings more than any other series. When scouts ask who is next, this is the sanctioning stamp they trust first.
